Christmas fingerprint heart gifts: a keepsake they will actually keep
Christmas shopping often ends the same way: a scented candle, a gift card, or something that looked personal online and felt generic in the hand. A fingerprint Christmas gift works differently. Two real ink fingerprints, pressed on paper and joined into one heart, become a keepsake that could only belong to those people.
This guide covers why that matters at Christmas, who it suits (grandparents, parents, partners, and families remembering someone), how the process works from ink to digital or print, and how to time the order. We make fingerprint hearts at Our Imprint, a Canadian-owned shop on Vancouver Island, and we say so where the product comes up.
Why a fingerprint heart beats a generic Christmas gift
Generic gifts fail for a simple reason: they could have been bought for anyone. A fingerprint heart cannot. The ridges in the artwork are the ridges someone pressed onto paper, so the piece is already specific before you add names or a date. That specificity is what people keep.
It also fits how Christmas actually works. Families are short on time, shipping is unreliable in December, and many people already own enough objects. A small, honest keepsake that records a relationship asks less of the recipient’s closet and more of their memory. Pair it with a short handwritten note and it usually lands better than a larger gift chosen in a hurry.
For grandparents
Grandparents are the classic case for a personalized Christmas gift for grandparents: they often say they need nothing, yet they keep every drawing and school photo. A fingerprint heart from a grandchild (or two) gives them something made by the family rather than bought about the family.
- A grandchild and a grandparent: ink both prints on a visit, with names and the year.
- Two grandchildren: each child presses one print so the heart is from the kids.
- Families who live far apart: each person inks and photographs a print at home, then one person assembles the artwork.
- If you cannot collect a print before Christmas morning, put a gift certificate under the tree and make the prints together in the new year.
For parents
A parent-and-child fingerprint heart suits Christmas because it marks the year without needing a big gesture. One print from a parent and one from a child, or two children’s prints for a parent, with the year in the caption, becomes a quiet record of this Christmas rather than a generic “family” gift.
Young children often need a few tries and a light press. The preview is free, so you can check clarity before you buy. Adult children living away can send a photo of their inked print and still be part of the piece.
For partners
For a partner, the gift can be the making as much as the object. Give a printable gift certificate on Christmas morning, then ink your fingers together on a quiet evening. That avoids stealing a fingerprint in advance, and it turns the keepsake into a shared ritual.
Long-distance couples can each ink and photograph a print where they are; one person joins them in the creator. Add names and the year, or leave the artwork plain if you prefer understated art.
Memorial remembrance at Christmas
The first Christmas without someone is hard. A fingerprint memorial keepsake is not for everyone and not for every moment. Some families want a quiet reminder; others find objects painful until later. Ask before you commission anything, or give a gift certificate they can redeem when and if they are ready.
When it fits, the piece usually joins the loved one’s print with a spouse’s, child’s, or grandchild’s. Many funeral homes can take a fingerprint on request, and some families already have an older ink print. Our Imprint only works from a clear photo of an actual fingerprint; it cannot invent ridges from an ordinary photo of a hand. Photos are processed in the browser and are not uploaded.
How it works: ink to heart to print
Each person presses a fingertip on an ink pad, then presses it down firmly onto plain white paper and lifts straight up — do not roll. You photograph each print in even daylight, open the creator, and add both photos. The software cleans up paper and shadows, recolours the ink, and lays the real ridges into a heart. Nothing is drawn or generated by AI.
Digital packages start at CA$19 and include a high-resolution PNG plus a printing guide. Matte prints start at CA$29 and framed prints at CA$79; they are printed in Canada by Printful and ship to your door. Our Imprint is Canadian-owned on Vancouver Island; the physical prints are fulfilled by Printful, not handmade in a home studio.
- Ink each fingertip lightly and photograph the prints straight on.
- Add both photos in the creator; they stay on your device during the preview.
- Add names, a date, and a short message, or choose artwork-only.
- Download the digital file, or order a matte or framed print shipped by Printful.
Order timing for Christmas
Printed and framed copies need production and shipping time. Order printed or framed copies by December 7 for delivery in Canada, or by December 2 for delivery to the US and other international destinations. If you are cutting it close, choose the digital download instead: it is instant, even on Christmas Eve, and you can print it locally or give a framed copy later.
Gift certificates are also instant. Tick that the order is a gift at checkout, print the certificate, and put it in a card. The recipient redeems it within 12 months with their own two ink prints, which is often kinder when you cannot collect fingerprints in time.
Mistakes to avoid
- Leaving a print order until mid-December and hoping shipping will cooperate.
- Using a smudged or underexposed fingerprint photo; the free preview will show the problem before you pay.
- Personalizing with guessed spellings or dates. Check first.
- Giving a memorial keepsake without asking whether the family wants one yet.
- Skipping the note. A short line about why you chose their prints is part of the gift.
Putting it under the tree
A fingerprint Christmas gift works best when it is specific, quiet, and timed honestly. Choose whose prints belong in the heart, leave enough time for a shipped print if you want one, and wrap something physical: a frame, a printed certificate, or a card with the file already printed inside. The keepsake they will actually keep is usually the one that could not have been bought for anyone else.
Keeping it a surprise? Give a gift certificate
Gift it now, they make it later. Choose Essential or Signature, tick “This is a gift” before checkout, and print the certificate that appears after payment. It carries a redeem code valid for 12 months. The recipient goes to ourimprint.ca/recover, enters the code, and adds their own two ink prints. Same price, nothing extra to buy.
Hoping to gift a print? A print is made from the recipient’s own two fingerprints, so it can’t be made ahead of time. Give a gift certificate instead: the recipient adds their own prints and creates their artwork — that is what the certificate covers — and from that finished artwork they can order a matte or framed print. The print is a separate order.
